Advanced Topics in Ocean Mapping
This course will focus on current, important issues in ocean mapping. The specific topic of the course will be selected based on the background and interests of the students. Potential topics include (though not limited to): New advances in ocean mapping data systems (swath mapping, sidescan sonar, hybrid systems, subbottom profilers); the processing of ocean mapping data; remote classification of seafloor materials; relevant topics in oceanography and marine geology/geophysics; environmental applications of ocean mapping. A seminar format is used.
The structure of GGE6311 changes from year to year. Starting in 2017, the course requirements are wrapped around the creation of an Ocean Mapping research themed blog. Examples of student blogs are listed below.
- Marine Big Data
- Habitat Mapping
- Dynamic Ocean Topography
- Continuous Vertical Datum for Canadian Waters (CVDCW)
- Autonomous Underwater Vehicles
