Students win Travel Bursary to Canadian Hydrographic Conference 2018

Six UNB Geodesy and Geomatics Engineering (GGE) undergraduate students and one GGE graduate student will be attending the 2018 Joint Canadian Hydrographic and National Surveyors’ Conference next month in Victoria, British Columbia. This biennial event is the leading ocean mapping themed meeting for industry, government, and academia in Canada. For the first time, the conference will host a Student Education Workshop and three travel bursaries have been made available for GGE undergraduate students to attend the conference. The students will participate in the focused workshop and attend technical sessions throughout the week. UNB GGE students will join 17 other students from across Canada to build their leadership skills and network with industry, academic, and government participants.

The Canadian Ocean Mapping Research and Education Network (COMREN) and QPS Canada are generously supporting three of the students with travel bursaries. The bursary provides funding to cover all costs associated with attending the CHC-NSC2018 conference, including registration, travel, and accommodations.  COMREN, in partnership with the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) Canada, has provided funding for two students (Michel Leger and Rebekah Hofland) and is organizing the student workshop.

Travel funding for the third student (Mary McLennan) has been provided by  QPS Canada as part of their new Women in Hydrography program. The UNB GGE department and the Ocean Mapping Group are proud to partner in this important initiative and look forward to enhancing and promoting the role of women in our industry.
